Welcome to the Indian Peacock Conservation Department

The Indian Peacock Conservation Department (IPCD), functioning under the Forest Department and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), Government of India, is dedicated to protecting, restoring, and securing the future of India’s national bird - the Indian Peafowl (Pavo cristatus).

The peacock is not only an ecological flagship species but also a symbol of India’s civilizational identity, cultural memory, and natural heritage. Under the strict legal provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, IPCD focuses on habitat security, anti-poaching enforcement, and scientific conservation planning to ensure that peafowl populations remain stable across landscapes.

Our field network collaborates with state forest wings, enforcement agencies, research institutions, and local communities to build a long-term conservation ecosystem that is people-centered, law-compliant, and evidence-driven.

Our Key Pillars

Conservation

Restoring and safeguarding natural habitats, water-linked ecosystems, and nesting grounds critical for peafowl survival.

Protection

Implementing a strict zero-tolerance policy against wildlife crime, illegal feather trade, and peafowl poaching activities.

Awareness

Strengthening citizen participation by engaging rural communities, schools, and youth groups in local conservation action.

Research and Scientific Monitoring

IPCD promotes continuous scientific studies on peafowl behavior, health trends, seasonal movement, habitat resilience, and ecological pressures. Data-backed field monitoring helps define policy priorities and improves conservation outcomes at district, state, and national levels.
