About the Department

Institutional Background and Mandate

The Indian Peacock Conservation Department (IPCD) was constituted as a focused public conservation system to secure India’s national bird through policy support, field coordination, wildlife protection awareness, and anti-trafficking action. As peafowl populations face growing pressure from habitat fragmentation, illegal trade channels, and localized ecological stress, IPCD serves as a dedicated response mechanism across state and regional landscapes.

IPCD operates in close policy alignment with the Forest Department and collaborates with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) on enforcement-sensitive matters. The department supports evidence-based conservation planning and helps standardize peafowl protection workflows including rescue, habitat monitoring, conflict mitigation, and community-based reporting models.

Vision

To build a nationally integrated peafowl conservation ecosystem where ecological protection, legal enforcement, and citizen participation collectively ensure stable and thriving peacock populations.

Mission

To conserve Indian peafowl through habitat restoration, scientific monitoring, trained conservation workforce recruitment, fast-response wildlife crime reporting, and strategic partnerships with institutions, communities, and environmental experts.

Legal and Regulatory Foundation

Indian peafowl is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. IPCD advances legal compliance by supporting awareness campaigns on prohibited activities, strengthening report-to-action workflows, and helping enforcement agencies trace patterns of poaching and illegal possession.

Workforce and Recruitment Commitment

IPCD recognizes that conservation quality is directly linked to recruitment quality. The department therefore prioritizes transparent recruitment channels for technical and field roles such as Wildlife Biologists, Forest Rangers, Veterinary Support Officers, Data Analysts, GIS Coordinators, Legal Assistants, and Community Mobilization Officers. Recruitment is followed by structured induction and job-readiness training to ensure operational outcomes.
